Natural materials for building are not new, but has been widely used before the material is created industrial products. These materials do not experience much in the process of manufacture. This causes no damage to the natural material nature, whether during the construction of the house (construction waste) and when this material will become obsolete and must be discarded. Straw is one of natural materials, here are some other natural elements.
WOOD
Wood is always a favorite many people for various benefits that have. Although the numbers a little more because of deforestation on a large scale, wood continues to be used properly by nature. Artificial material that is claimed as a substitute for wood sometimes less environmentally friendly because it will not decompose in nature. Therefore, the timber should not be abandoned but the wood supply which must be added and saved the use of wood in such a way. Wood preservation technology also helps save because the wood can be much stronger and durable. In addition, wood quality mediocre, with the preservation of this becomes feasible for building structures.
BAMBOO
Bamboo can be used for various building elements. For the structure of the house, bamboo has many advantages proved. Fiber is tough and very good elastic in weight-bearing (both load press / pull, shear, and bending). In addition, bamboo can also be a material floor, walls, roof, and so forth. Compared with wood, bamboo regenerate faster so do not wait too long to get a decent bamboo. Indonesia has a number of large species, but unfortunately not very developed.
NATURAL FINISHING
Finishing made of natural materials would be healthier for the occupants of the house. Another advantage, finishing can deliver a more natural suasanya also fit current trends. Unfortunately today most of the finishing most of the use of chemicals, although there are some producers that started to reduce their use (for example, no longer used as a diluent solvent and non-toxic finish). In the past, people make their own finishing of materials in nature, such as clay, chalk, and others. Toraja people in making his home first need to shed a toddy (fermented coconut water) to make the color more "out" and durable.
CAT / NATURAL DYES
Indonesia's traditional buildings are usually quite lively colors, and had no paint industry as now. Apparently, paint or dye to the building is made from natural materials available in the neighborhood. This natural dye no side effects for the occupants and the environment. Because they have not developed, then the color choices are still limited, such as black, red, white, yellow, and mix-mix. Red and yellow color comes from clay, black from charcoal, white from the lime wedges. First Papuans similar process to get the liquid slug white.

Hi Sleman!
I noticed your blog about Natural materials for houses.
Originally all kinds of quarters were made of some kind of natural material.
Still some nations do and also quite far in the past at others.
Here in Iceland, it is not so far.
100 yeares back, most of Icelanders at the countryside lived in quarters made of turf and rocks except wood as driftwood.
I just made me feel warmer within to read your blog about ethnics and nature.
Also because I´m one of few in Iceland who know how to make walls from turf, swamp and rocks.
I got the change to learn from one of them who were still alive, 30 yeares ago.
After 33 yeares as freelance landscape gardener I decided to study Environmental and Landscape Planning at university of LBHI (www.lbhi.is)
By the way, how much do you know about reedroof-making or making roofs of straws?
My email is bensib@simnet.is and "a kind of a web" is www.simnet.is/bensib.
wish you a merri christmas
