Architecture design is a scientific and artistic concept of building structures and understanding various building materials and forms. Generally the architect works in coordination with the internal and external environment of the structure, but when designs go against human tastes and cultural preferences the result is disastrous. An example of this are the drab and indistinguishable cities lined with uniform box structures - such as identical houses, office complexes and high rises.

Design in architectural language means the sum total of plan of building, the elevation, section, figure, proportion, ground, scale, ratio to external unit measure and grids. Even though we regard architecture as an art form, an indispensable principal in architectural design is a keen mathematical and analytical understanding of forms. Without mathematical hypothesis to guide us, we would have skewed designs and patterns.

Beginning with Romanesque architecture, design was defined in strong, simple, massive forms graduating into the ribs and piers of the 11th century and on to the perfect form of 13th-century Gothic architecture. With each century the concepts and designs changed, ranging from Baroque (17th century), Georgian (18th century), Classical and Gothic revival (19th century) to expressions of technology and modernistic art (20th century), giving credence to Victor Hugo's prophecy of doom that ‘the word will kill stone’.

The reason for these strong words was that before the popularity of visual media it was art and architecture that gave expression to our creative sensibilities. The history of a city or country could be gleamed from the structures and buildings. With World War II the ground rules were being regulated by omnipresent media, mobility and economic wealth, making us witness architecture designs ranging from burlesque to grandiose to just plain simple. The environmental degradation of natural resources turned our focus to environmentally-sensitive or sustainable designs even as architects turned towards eco-friendly material. Architecture designs became case-sensitive - appealing to nature as a metaphor for cities, buildings or residential complexes.

Modern architecture is a style found in the buildings that have simple form without any ornamental structures to them. This style of architecture first came up around 1900. By 1940, modern architecture was identified as an international style and became the dominant way to build for many decades in the 20th century. Modern architects apply scientific and analytical methods to design.

Many historians relate the origins of this style of architecture to the social and political revolution of the time, though others see modern architecture as primarily driven by technological and engineering developments. The availability of new materials such as iron, steel, concrete, and glass brought about new building techniques as part of the industrial revolution. Some regard modern architecture as a reaction against ancient building style. Above all, it is widely accepted as a matter of taste.

For the international style, the most commonly used materials are glass for the facade, steel for exterior support, and concrete for the floors and interior supports. The floor plans are functional and logical. But, many people are not fond of the modern style. They find its stark, uncompromisingly rectangular geometrical designs quite inhumane. They think this universal style is sterile, elitist, and lacks meaning.

Modern architecture challenged traditional ideas about the types of structures suitable for architectural design. Only important civic buildings, aristocratic palaces, churches, and public institutions had long been the mainstay of architectural practices. But, modernist designers argued that architects should design everything that was necessary for society, even the most humble buildings.

Architects began to plan low-cost housing, railroad stations, factories, warehouses, and commercial spaces. In the first half of the 20th century, modern architects produced furniture, textiles, and wallpaper - as well as designing houses - to create a totally designed domestic environment. The aesthetics used by modern architects celebrated function in all forms of design, from household furnishings to massive ocean liners and new flying machines.

Modern architecture originated in the United States and Europe and spread across the rest of the world. The characteristic features that made modern architecture possible were buildings, stylistic movements, technology, and modern materials.

Inorganic soils, those with high contents of sand, gravel, or inorganic silts have a bearing capacity of 1500 psf or more (check with the local building department of conservation agent).

In this soil condition, the bearing capacity for a 12-inch by 12-inch footing is 1500 lbs. If the soils contain higher amounts of clay or organic material, the bearing capacity may be less, requiring a greater footing footprint.

Computing Footing Size

The dimensions for concrete footings carrying normal loads in good soils are 12 by 12 inch to 14 by 14 inch and for round footings, a diameter of 14 to 16 inches.

In most situations, a 6-inch deep spread footing is adequate, but for heavy loads or for a spread footing greater than 16 inches on a side, the depth will increase to 8 inches.

The number of footings required is related to the tributary loads that will be carried. For large decks, an engineer should be consulted, but these figures provide a general rule of thumb for footing designs.

The footing, typically a poured concrete structure, must sit below the point where soil freezes in winter. Information on the depth of freezing can be acquired from local building departments. Frost heave is a condition of water, temperature, and soil permeability that results when water in the soil freezes and expands. It can lift the footing, resulting in racking or structural failure of the deck.

In areas prone to frost heave or with poor drainage, additional drainage material such as drain rock can be placed below the footings to reduce water retention in the soil. For additional strength, a grid of rebar can be embedded into the footing 8 inches on center.

In the illustration, B is 76 X 72 inches = 5472 square inches; divided by 144 = 38 square feet. To calculate the pressure, multiply 38 by 50 psf. which equals 1900 pounds. Because the soil-bearing capacity is 1500 psf. the spread must be greater than 12 X12 inches. Dividing 1900 pounds by 1500 psf gives a footing size of 1.26 square feet or 1.12 feet square. Converting to inches and rounding up, footing dimensions of 14 X 14 inches will be adequate.

Building the Piers

The simplest footing is a pier block, a precast battered square concrete block with an embedded post anchor, on which the post is bolted. Unless set below grade, piers will not resist any frost heave, and because of their size, have limits on their load-carrying capacity. Some codes require a more permanent cast-in-place footing (check with local codes).

Concrete piers, required by code in many parts of the country, are not susceptible to insect infestations and are decay-proof and very strong. The pier is typically poured on top of a spread footing which has been stubbed out with reinforcing bars to tie the pier to the footing.

The spread footing is a 6- to 8-inch-thick square form, typically 6 to 8 inches greater in width than the pier diameter. After the spread footing pour has set, a concrete pier form is placed on top of the footing. The form can be constructed of wood to pour a square or rectangular column.

Alternately, cylindrical paper forms, "sono" tubes, can be used, which are available in diameter sizes from 4 inches, increasing in 2-inch increments up to 18 inches and in diameters of 24 and 36 inches.

An 8-inch diameter pier, with two to four L-shaped vertical reinforcing bars embedded in the footing, is usually adequate for a 4 X 4 wood post. A 10- to 12-inch-diameter pier is recommended for a 6 X 6 post. After the concrete is poured, a galvanized steel post anchor can be embedded into the top of the form to receive a post or beam.

Installing a Posts

Though this is not required by most codes, the post anchor separates the end grain of the post from the concrete surface and creates a half-inch air gap below the post that ensures good ventilation below the end grain of the wood post.

The top of the concrete pier should be hand-formed to provide an adequate pitch sloping away from the post base, reducing any water build up that could infiltrate the end grain.

The intermediary wood post transfers the load from the beam and joists to the pier or footing. If the finished elevation of the deck is less than 1 to 2 feet from grade, the concrete piers typically extend above grade to receive the beam, eliminating the wood post.

If a wood post is used, a 4 X 4 post is often adequate to transfer the loads. However many designers specify larger 6 X 6 posts and double-notch the post on either side to provide a 1.5-inch seat that will receive a sandwich beam. In this method a 2.5-inch tongue is left on the post that protrudes up through the beam and through which the beam and post can be bolted together.

The post need not be one solid member, especially if it is greater than 8 inches in either dimension. Timbers of this dimension can be expensive or difficult to find. An alternative is to build up a post using standard 2 X dimensional lumber. A 6 X 6 post can be fabricated from four pieces of 2 X 6, glued and laminated.

Last week, Part I of this series discussed the origins of wood decks and basic framing systems. This week our five part series continues with the fundamentals of foundations.

The structural integrity of a deck begins with the foundation, and, unlike a house with a continuous perimeter concrete foundation, deck foundations are typically footings that receive concentrated loads at specific isolated points. To create a stable structure, the framing must transfer the loads at the corners to the posts and to intermediate points along the beam's length.

Computing Loads on Foundations

The loads that are transferred include the live loads (people and movable items on the deck) and the dead loads (the weight of the structure itself). The live loads plus the increasing dead loads transfer from the decking through the joists, beams, and posts above grade, through the concrete pier and spread footing, and into the ground.

The footing is sized to carry the total loads, which is determined by combining the live and dead loads. If the loads are equally distributed, one can determine the "footprint" of the footing: Divide the total load on all the footings by the number of footings; then divide the load on each footing by the bearing capacity of the soil.

To determine the total load, multiply the total deck square footage by the design live and dead loads. Most codes require a deck to support an estimated live load of 40 pounds per square foot (psf) combined with a 10 psf dead load for a total of 50 psf. However some require a structure sized for 60 psf. Check with the applicable local codes for the locale of the project.

For estimating purposes, a beam carries the weight of the deck halfway between it and the next beam or ledger; this is called the tributary load.

In Japan, the deck became an extension of the pavilion, often appearing to float out over a water body. Wood benches were incorporated into the framing and the orientation of the deck was directed towards specific views.

The use of the deck in Chinese and Japanese cultures often served the individual or family as a platform from which to view the garden, or as a place of contemplation.

This is in contrast to western cultures, in which the deck is focal point for entertaining and socializing, its size sometimes overwhelming the remainder of the garden. In suburban areas, where space is plentiful, decks have evolved into a rambling style, less formal than their prototypical urban porch or verandah.

Decks are also used to link the house to the outdoors on steeply sloped sites, where patios are not possible.

A Unique Construction Challenge

The framing of a deck is similar to the framing of a traditional house, designed as a load bearing structure. The major difference is that the deck framing must stand rigid without the stability of floor sheathing, continuous foundations, walls, or a roof.

A deck is typically built without solid sides or an impermeable covering above, and it is constantly exposed to the weathering effects of the climate, rain, snow, and temperature changes. Prolonged exposure to moisture promotes the growth of molds and fungi and results in unsafe slippery surfaces.

Safety is also an issue when the deck is raised above finish grade. Accidental falls over the edge are a concern, especially for younger children. Beyond safety, form and integration with other built or natural elements, level changes, site grades, entries, and traffic flow will all influence the design of the structure.

Two Structural Systems

There are two structural systems commonly employed in deck construction, platform framing and plank-and-beam framing. The difference between the two is relatively simple.

The platform framing utilizes an intermediary horizontal structural member, the joist, to transfer loads from the decking to the beam. The joists are typically spaced 16" to 24" (41 to 61 centimeters) apart and because of their size—2X6 or 2X8—allow for a greater distance between the beams below than in the plank-and-beam system. The thickness of the joist must be included in the finished profile, thus this system, produces a thicker substructure.

Plank-and-beam framing utilizes a single horizontal structural member, a beam, to transfer the loads from the deck to the post. Eliminating the joists allows for a lower profile, but plank-and-beam decking typically spans greater distances and requires a thicker material than that used in the platform method.

Basic Framing

When designing a structure, the process work is thought through, in reverse of the actual building process. The spacing of the members is determined by the span of the members above, thus a top-to-down sequence makes sense.

The process becomes somewhat circular as aesthetic decisions may require dimensional changes of the members and the necessary recalculations. The order in this description of decking follows the structure as it is built.

Origins of Wood Decks

The prevalence of wood decks, attached to, or independent of the house is a relatively recent phenomenon in western cultures. Because wood was used for many other purposes—fuel, railroad and bridge construction—paved patios, dirt yards, and formal lawns were common for gathering areas, while wood was limited to the house or fence construction.

The closest forerunner of the deck may be the expansive porches found in the southern or Florida style of housing. Variations of the type can be found in the screen porches of New England, in the verandahs of the grand antebellum mansions of the south, and in the expansive roofed front porches of plantation style houses found in the southeastern Gulf States and Caribbean.

The historic use of decks in China and Japan can be traced back hundreds of years. In the Chinese garden, a miniature representation of nature with symbolic lakes, mountains, and trees is viewed from an open wood-decked pavilion.

Celebrating, Rain and Shine

The house called Rainwater is a complex composition of four simple volumes — residence, guest house, office, garage — each capped with a planar steel roof rakishly tilted to channel water down to a single cantilevered corner.

The divergent roof planes almost intersect, and the volumes converge into a single coherent element. But the singularity is elusive. No matter where you stand — above, on either side, or below — you never see the same combination of house, or, for that matter, the entire house. At least one of the volumes, one of the rooftops, is always hidden, just around a corner.

Respecting the Hillside

"We felt it would be good to have a subdued presence from the front," says Eimar Boesjes, an architectural software developer and Internet entrepreneur. "It doesn't say 'we're here!' like the other houses."

Boesjes collaborated on the design and construction of this, their own house, with his wife, landscape designer Anita Van Asperdt.

Although innovative in form and ambitious in size (5,000 square feet, or 465 square meters), Rainwater manages to avoid subverting the Craftsman theme of Moonshadow Lane, a densely built cul-de-sac in the forested South Hills of Eugene, Oregon.

The house is modest to its oversized neighbors, peeking over a shoulder at the street from its perch on a sloped, pie-shaped infill lot that drops into a mature stand of Douglas fir then merges with a protected open space area deeded to remain undeveloped.
